For as long as I can remember, my mom and I have wanted to start a business together. My mom is, without a doubt, the most talented person I know. If it's made of fabric...the woman can make it. This came in particularly handy for me while growing up because if I wanted a new outfit...she could make one! Here is the first dress she ever made me...
And when other friends and family members caught on to my mom's talent, they started hiring her. She made everything from prom dresses to bridesmaid dresses...and they were beautiful.
When I was younger, I never fully understood how difficult it was to sew. I just assumed that when the time came, my mom would be able to teach me to sew and I would be just as good as her.
But then the time came and well...I was NOT as good as her.
At all.
So I got my Masters in English and decided to become a college teacher instead :-)
I've left all the sewing and knitting to her and she has given me so many things to treasure, like the flower had she knitted for my daughter Addison...
and the striped stocking hat she made for my son Blake...
and the countless other hats, blankets, totes, quilts and clothing she has made for our family and friends over the years.
She is incredibly talented and if I had a dollar for every time someone told my mom that she should open her own shop, we would be millionaires by now :-)
So in April of 2012, after months and months of talking, planning, and sewing...we finally opened ThePolkaDotPosie. It was such an exciting day for us and we were blown away by all the support from our friends and family. They were, and continue to be, our biggest cheerleaders. Without them…our shop would not be where it is today.
And where our shop is today is BEYOND ANYTHING WE COULD HAVE EVER DREAMED OF!!! Technically…we have TWO shops now. ThePolkaDotPosie, where my mom works her magic, and ThePolkaDotPosie{Printables} where I work my magic. It was a big decision to add on our second shop last year, but it made the most sense to have our fabric items and digital items in their own homes. Plus, we LOVE having this blog as a way to bring our two shops together and get creative.
Right now, my mom and I are leading pretty busy lives. I am a full-time mommy, and she is a full-time grandma. I teach college English and she is active in her quilt guilds and sewing bees. We don't have as much time to dedicate to our shops as we would like, but we know that eventually, our babies will be grown and in school all day and we will have time to sew and make planner pages to our hearts content. But for now…we will just go with the flow and continue to live out our dream as a mother/daughter team :-)
In closing, we just want to thank every person who has ever stopped by one of our shops, read our blog, downloaded a free printable, left feedback in our shop or shared our link on Facebook or Pinterest. We are eternally grateful for each and every one of you, and we hope you will visit with us again soon.
Loved your story- if anyone can make a successful business it will be the two of you! Cannot wait to watch this grow. Good Luck to one of my favorite Mother-Daughter business teams!!!
